Top 5 Things to Pack for Winter Adventures
Top 5 Things to Pack for Winter Adventures
Winter in the Rockies is one of the most rewarding times to get outside— quiet forests, fresh snow, and crisp mountain air. Staying warm, safe, and comfortable starts with you and what's in your pack. Here are the top five essentials I recommend packing on your winter outing.
1. Proper Layers
A good layering system is your best friend. Pack (and wear) a moisture-wicking base layer, thermal long underwear, they can be wicking fabrics made of merino wool or polyester are popular. Next an insulating mid-layer, this allows perspiration to evaporate while protecting your core and a weatherproof outer shell, ideally this layer is fully waterproof, windproof and breathable. These layers will provide and allow you comfort in a wide variety of weather conditions. adjust as you warm up or cool down.
2. Traction for Your Boots
Traction aids like microspikes also known as winter cleats will provide you confidence on packed snow, frozen dir and icy sections. They’re lightweight, easy to carry, and a game changer on winter trails, just toss them in your pack. When you need them they can easily fit over your boot or trekking shoe.
3. A Thermos with Something Hot
Tea, hot chocolate or even soup! Anything warm helps regulate your core temperature and boosts your energy. A small comfort and step towards hydration can go a long way. Don't forget an extra cup!
4. Extra Gloves, Toques & Socks
Wet gear equals cold hands or feet and ultimately a shorter adventure. Pack an extra pair of gloves, a spare toque and socks in a dry bag. They weigh almost nothing but make a huge difference and putting on a new pair of socks at the end of the day feels amazing! Not to mention this additional gear can be shared with your group.
5. A Headlamp (Even for Day Trips)
The winter days are shorter now and our weather changes quickly. A tree covered area can seem dimmer even earlier than expected and having a headlamp ensures you’re never caught off guard and carries peace of mind.
Along with our Top 5 consider bringing some of these other essentials depending on the length of your trip and where you're travelling.
First Aid, Sun protection, Navigation, Extra Snacks, Fire and a Knife.
